List program changes for curriculum revisions:

Delete “Chem 101/102 General Chemistry I and II or” from Major requirements for the BS degree in the major of Food Science and Technology with a concentration in Food Science

Delete FOSC 306 as a required course from the Minor in Food Science

List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum:

None

Other affected units:  Permission to require our students to take Chem 103/104 was obtained from the Dept. of Chemistry (John Burmeister – 11/10/06 see attached email)

Rationale:

Majors in BS degree of Food Science and Technology with a concentration in Food Science required are required to take Chem 321 (organic chem.) which has a prerequisite of Chem 104.  In the past many of our students took the Chem 101/102 series as an option to the Chem 103/104 series (as currently stated). With the new change to UDSIS, prerequisites will be enforced by the computer, thus our students need to take the Chem 103/104 series so that they can later register for Chem 321.  We will now require students to take Chem 103/104 and no longer give them the option of Chem 101/102.

Remove FOSC 306 as a required course from the Minor in Food Science because this class is no longer available.

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the present curriculum.)

Proposal for Course Deletions in Catalog for Major and Minor in FOSC

November 13, 2006

Department of Animal and Food Sciences

1. The Department of Animal and Food Sciences proposes the following deletion from the Major requirements for the BS degree in the major of Food Science and Technology with a concentration in Food Science

The current course requirements for the major reads:

“Chem 101/102 General Chemistry I and II

     or

Chem 103/104 General Chemistry I and II”

We propose to delete:

“Chem 101/102 General Chemistry I and II

     or

The course requirements will now read as:

“Chem 103/104 General Chemistry I and II”

Rationale:

Majors in Food Science and Technology with a concentration in Food Science are required to take Chem 321 (organic chem.) which has a prerequisite of Chem 104.  In the past many of our students took the Chem 101/102 series as an option to the Chem 103/104 series (as currently stated). With the new change to UDSIS, prerequisites will be enforced by the computer, thus our students need to take the Chem 103/104 series so that they can later register for Chem 321.  We will now require students to take Chem 103/104 and no longer have the option of Chem 101/102.
