List program changes for curriculum revisions:

A new concentration in the B.S. degree in Biological Sciences is being proposed. The component of the program supported by UD will consist of the first three years (90 credits) of the B.A. degree in Biological Sciences.   Students admitted to the Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) PharmD program by a joint UD/TJU admissions committee during their 5th semester are also admitted to the B.S. degree with a new concentration in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Students spend the remaining four years at Thomas Jefferson University, where they will complete their remaining undergraduate credits and graduate coursework leading to the PharmD degree. The 90 credits at UD will meet the University/College’s FYE, DLE, multicultural, writing, and breadth requirements. The undergraduate courses taken at TJU during the fourth year and fifth years will replace courses students would normally take during their senior year in the Biological Sciences B.S. degree program.  Furthermore, the curriculum allows students, who opt not to continue into the PharmD component of the degree, to complete the Biological Sciences BA requirements within one year.

List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum:

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

NONE

Other affected units:

(List other departments affected by this new or revised curriculum.  Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

This B.S. concentration is available to all students currently in the B.A. degree program and the prerequisite courses for the concentration are courses that are already open to B.A. degree majors. Thus there will be no additional burden on the listed prerequisite courses.

Rationale:

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

There is a severe shortage of pharmacist in the State of Delaware and there currently isn’t an option for State of Delaware residents attending UD to obtain training to become a pharmacist. Thomas Jefferson University, which serves the State’s medical school and which already has an articulated program in Occupation Therapy with UD, is opening a new pharmacy school in the fall of 2008. By articulating a Biological Sciences B.S. degree concentration with the TJU PharmD degree, UD gives students a direct path to becoming a pharmacist.

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the present curriculum.)

1)      The University of Delaware/Thomas Jefferson University Articulation Agreement [attachment 1] :This is the agreement for implementation of the degree program made between the University of Delaware Provost and the Dean of the Jefferson College of Health Professions.

2)      A ‘worksheet’ catalog page showing the changes made to the current Biological Sciences catalog page. [attachment 2]

For clarity purposes, this form shows the revisions that were made to the original Biological Sciences catalog page to create the BioSci/PharmD catalog page.

3)      New University of Delaware Undergraduate Catalog Entry for the description of the new           B.S. degree concentration in Pharmaceutical Sciences [attachments 3]

4)      The proposed Biological Sciences catalog page for students planning on participating in the combined UD-TJU BS/PharmD degree program. [attachment 4]

This form contains the proposed catalog page for those students in the Health Studies program who have also been accepted into the 6 year program.  The page contains only those requirements that will be met at the University of Delaware.

5)      Matching TJU prerequisites and UD courses required for entrance into the graduate program in Pharmacy. [attachment 5]

These are the undergraduate courses required by TJU as prerequisites to entering graduate study in Pharmacy, and the corresponding list of courses that UD will offer to meet these requirements.  The UD courses have already been approved by TJU as meeting their prerequisite requirements.

6)      Course descriptions for Thomas Jefferson University courses that fulfill the Biological     Sciences 43 elective credit requirement. [attachment 6]

7)      A semester-by-semester program sample curriculum for the first three years of study at UD and the first two years at TJU in the PharmD program. [attachment 7]

This is the planned curriculum for the entire 6 year program of study, listing courses necessary for earning the B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
