Rationale:

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

The proposed Advertising Minor is a collaborative effort between the Department of Business Administration (Lerner College of Business & Economics) and the Departments of Art and Communication (both in the College of Arts and Sciences).  Very few universities offer specialized study in advertising beyond the traditional advertising course.  The advertising industry looks to fill its entry-level positions with those trained in the field, but since few universities offer this training, students majoring in fields such as Marketing, Communication, English, Psychology, Sociology, and History are often recruited. The proposed advertising minor can prepare students from any discipline to enter the field of advertising.  In addition, the minor contributes to a broader and more critical perspective on today's media-saturated society.

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the present curriculum.)

Catalog Entry (Proposed)

MINOR IN ADVERTISING

The minor in advertising is designed to give students from any major an increased understanding of the concepts of marketing, economics, mass communication, and public relations, as well as the strategies and tactics of advertising management.  In addition, students will gain familiarity with the rapidly changing digital media landscape and examine some of the social and cultural issues inherent in the new media and technologies.  The minor is awarded only to students who have applied and been admitted to the program.  Applications are reviewed each September and February.  The credits required for the minor may also be used to meet other distribution requirements, such as degree breadth requirements and professional electives.  Also, students with a minor in Business Administration qualify to apply for the minor.
