List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

SCEN 550. This course provides science research and problem-based learning experiences for future middle school science teachers. The new course models science instructional approaches and content appropriate for middle school science. It is designed to fit the objectives of the Elementary Teacher Education program.

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

Please see attached.

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

With support from the National Science Foundation, science and education faculty have revised and realigned the offerings for science and science education courses for K-8 science teacher preparation. SCEN 550 is a new course designed to provide advanced problem-based learning experience for K-8 teacher education majors. It has been designed to align with EDUC 443, the middle school science curriculum course currently required of Elementary Teacher Education majors with Middle School Science as their second certification area, and it will be listed as a co-requisite with EDUC 443. SCEN 550 will fulfill NCATE requirements for science research preparation for future middle school science teachers.

SCEN 550 will rotate its content focus through earth science, biology, and physical science, depending on the science instructors assigned to the course (but following a regular schedule aligned with earlier science course offerings). The School of Education advising office will be notified of the rotating schedule so that freshmen who declare Middle School Science as their concentration will know which area SCEN 550 covers. The advising office will keep track of the schedule of topics and inform students for which course in the list of requirements that SCEN 550 will substitute.

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
