None

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

The B.A. in Educational Studies is an undergraduate major in the School of Education that does not lead to teacher certification. There are two primary reasons for proposing the deactivation of this major. First, the enrollment in this program is extremely low. For the past five years, only 2-3 students have graduated each year in this major. Currently, there is 1 student in the major. The major clearly does not address the needs and interests of the students. On the other hand, the School of Education does offer a minor in Educational Studies and students have expressed an interest in it. Currently, 35 students have declared this minor.

Second, the faculty resources needed to improve the quality of the curriculum are not readily available. In particular, the program includes many introductory courses and two independent studies. The independent studies demand a large amount of faculty members’ time. In addition, there are no plans to design new courses appropriate for students in this major. Since the creation of an academically rigorous curriculum is not viable, the major should be deleted.
