new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the
overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
The goal of the minor is to enable students across campus to
engage deeply in educational issues within their particular professional
interests. The first proposed new course in the minor is EDUC 470: Topics in
Education. Students in this capstone course would examine selected education controversies in their broader
philosophical and/or historical contexts. The
second proposed new course is EDUC 459: Urban Schools and Urban Landscapes.
Students in this course would examine the historical, socio-cultural, economic,
and political perspectives on the urban education experience. Both courses
engage students in educational issues from multiple perspectives.

Adding the new capstone course EDUC 470 will
ensure that the minor addresses several of the goals. In this course, the
students will read, write, and engage in topical research presentations; some
of them will be individual projects while others will be group projects. These
projects address Goals 1 and 3. Students will examine aspects of a contemporary
and/or historical area of controversy, such as universal public education,
freedom of conscience, or desegregation. The idea is that they will look at
cultural “flashpoints” (and those flashpoints’ antecedents) and gain an
appreciation for how ideological and cultural divisions regularly play
themselves out in our educational institutions, the venue where we so often
fight over what symbols should define us. The disciplinary approach will be
from the direction of the humanities, viz., philosophy and history, but will
also regularly incorporate studies characteristic of the social sciences and
legal studies. This examination addresses Goals 2, 4, 5, 6, and 9.

There are four proposed changes for the minor.

Replace EDUC 665/PSYC 209 with EDUC
470. The current minor requires the
statistics course EDUC 665 or PYSC 209. EDUC 665 is a masters’ level course
that is not developmentally appropriate for undergraduates. PSYC 209 has a
prerequisite of PSYC 100, so if students are not in a major that requires PSYC
100, then they would need to take this course in addition to the other minor
courses. The new course EDUC 470: Topics in Education would provide juniors and
seniors with the opportunity to examine selected education controversies and draw upon and connect ideas from other education
courses. This capstone experience is currently missing from the minor
and would be more valuable than taking a statistics course.

Create choices in the areas of human
development and special education. Currently, students can take a human development course
(EDUC 205) or a special education course (EDUC 230 or 414). In order to
have a more complete understanding of the field of education, students should
take a course in both of these areas. The proposed minor would require a human
development course (EDUC 205) and a special education course (EDUC 230
or 414). In addition, requiring EDUC 205 would guarantee that the students
would take a course with a field experience in a local school and/or community
center.

Add an elective to the list of
cultural diversity electives. EDUC 258, 259 and 419 are electives in the area of cultural
diversity. Adding the proposed new course EDUC 459: Urban Schools and Urban
Landscapes to the list of electives in this area would increase the number of
options.

Increase the number of credits. Most minors are a minimum of 18
credits, so adding the additional human development/special education course
makes the minor similar to other minors.
