List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
IFST 481: Honors Capstone Student Teaching Seminar
Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate
education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/
Honors students will take IFST 481 instead of IFST 480: Student
Teaching Seminar. This new course addresses several of the university’s
goals of undergraduate education:
1. Attain effective skills in oral and written communication, quantitative
reasoning, and the use of information technology: Students will be required to
complete and publicly defend a mastery teaching portfolio as well as a summary
of teacher research. The portfolio may be presented online using Livetext.
6. Develop the intellectual curiosity,
confidence, and engagement that will lead to lifelong learning: Students will
be required to develop a teacher research project investigating a topic of
their choice that will be implemented during their student teaching placements.
7. Develop the ability to integrate
academic knowledge with experiences that extend the boundaries of the
classroom: The teacher research project will combine knowledge gained in the
classroom and through library research with experiences during 18 weeks of
student teaching.
Identify other units affected
by the proposed changes:
(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)
None
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
All students completing an honors
degree must complete a capstone course. Currently, early childhood education
(ECE) majors who are completing an honors degree must take a capstone course
outside of their major because there are no designated capstone courses in the
ECE major. The major has no room for a three-credit free elective, so honors
students must take an extra course to fulfill this requirement. The proposed
course is designed to fit in with ECE majors’ required courses and would be
substituted for IFST 480: Student Teaching Seminar, which is required for
non-honors students. IFST 480 is only two credits and is pass/fail. As a
result, that course cannot be a capstone course. The proposed course will
include additional assignments involving teachers as researchers and a public
presentation of findings along with the other requirements of IFST 480, which
requires students to complete a mastery portfolio that is publicly defended.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
HONORS BACHELOR OF SCIENCE:
EARLY CHILDHOOD
EDUCATION
The recipient must complete:
1. All
requirements for the Bachelor of
Science degree in Early Childhood Education
2. All of the University’s
generic
requirements for the Honors Baccalaureate Degree. (See page 48 of
this catalog.)
3. These additional
requirements:
a. Student
Teaching Seminar must be taken as an Honors course (IFST 481). [Current program: “(IFST 480)”]
b. Achieve a 3.4 GPA in major.
