Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

There are no other units affected by this proposed change. There is no other undergraduate major at UD using the terms “organizational” or “leadership.” Its focus upon effective leadership for mobilizing people to form organizations for ethical, socially responsible and sustainable change for individuals, communities, and societies does not duplicate the mission of other units. As this program is within the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy, it is excluded from AACSB or any other external program accreditation procedures.

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s): Name Change from Leadership to Organizational and Community Leadership

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

The need to revise the name of the Leadership major and minor to Organizational and Community Leadership stems from several sources.

First, the Leadership program moved from the Department of Consumer Studies to the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy. With this move, the focus of the undergraduate major became realigned with the focus of the existing graduate MPA concentration in Organizational Leadership, and it is part of the strategic plan of the School to strengthen the ability of undergraduate students in this major to participate in an accelerated degreee program leading to the MPA in less than the usual six years. Changing the name to organizational and community leadership at the undergraduate level serves to strengthen the integration of the undergraduate and graduate program in SUAPP, and serves as an explicit pathway for students seeking to further their education through an accelerated program. This name change is supported by the faculty of the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy.

Second, Leadership is an amorphous name without meaning or context, particularly to prospective freshmen. Our programmatic assessments have indicated that many prospective students believe that this is a skill-based, personal development program, and thus do not choose it as an academic major. The name of Organizational and Community Leadership, however, positions the major within our mission: our majors use their knowledge of leadership and quality of life issues to mobilize collective actions within organizational contexts that advance ethical, socially responsible and sustainable change for individuals, communities, and societies.

Third, a review of undergraduate leadership programs nationwide indicate that Organizational and Community Leadership is the program name most used. Thus, using that name will make us more recognizable and more easily found by prospective students and colleagues in similar units at other institutions.
