List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

All courses required for the proposed minor are existing courses; optional courses from which the students choose include new courses: MEEG485 Control of Human Movement, that has been taught experimentally, and MEEG486, Cell and Tissue Transport. Both are currently in the course challenge system for permanent-course approval.

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

The technical nature of the proposed minor and its engineering base will help the students involved to learn to think critically to solve problems (#2). Also, by allowing students from other majors to also focus on biomedical engineering, expanding our current concentration into a minor will allow students from other departments (e.g., biology; physics; health, nutrition, & exercise sciences; the other engineering majors; etc.) to join together thus providing exposure to more diverse ways of thinking that underlie the search for knowledge (#4). Finally, by its very nature, the body of knowledge comprising this minor demonstrates to students the interdisciplinary growth which fosters the intellectual curiosity, confidence and engagement that should lead to lifelong learning (#6).

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

Biological Sciences; Mathematical Sciences; Physics & Astronomy; and Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences.

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

Our Center for Biomedical Engineering Research (CBER) now has 33 faculty members from seven departments and four colleges associated with it. CBER is a very successful center, having many research grants, including an NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence award. We also have many students working on CBER-related projects. Hence, we have a growing, university-wide interest in this area of research. We would like to expand our undergraduate biomedical engineering program so that it is available to students in other departments. This will require us to expand and offer a Minor in Biomedical Engineering rather than our current Biomedical Engineering Concentration (within the Mechanical Engineering Major). With such an expansion, our undergraduates (students in the Concentration and students in our undergraduate Student Advisory Committee) have indicated the Mechanical Engineering undergraduates would prefer obtaining the broader minor instead of the concentration - if both were available. Thus we propose to eliminate our current Biomedical Engineering Concentration within Mechanical Engineering (BMEG) and instead offer a minor in Biomedical Engineering to the entire University of Delaware community.

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
