List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

None

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

This revision is to prevent confusion regarding breadth requirements as undergraduates and advisors interpret the course catalog.  There is no substantive change to any program of study, only how they are explained (see rationale).

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

None

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

1.  The proposal is to add Nutrition to the list of approved programs for Department Breadth Requirements in the Biological and Natural Sciences and Mathematics for students in the Health and Exercise Science (HESC) majors in the Department of Health, Nutrition, and Exercise Science. This change is being proposed separately for the five following majors: Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Health & Physical Education, Health Behavior Science, and Sport Management.

Several years ago when the Nutrition program joined the department, Nutrition was eliminated from the list because it is not appropriate for students in the Nutrition majors to count nutrition courses as breadth requirements. The intention was always to keep Nutrition courses as Science Breadth Requirement options for the students in the non-nutrition majors, and, in fact, NTDT200 has been and continues to be listed as a course requirement that satisfies a breadth requirement in the lists of required courses for these majors.

Adding “ Nutrition* ” to the master list of approved breadth requirement options at the beginning of the description of department major requirements simply adds consistency to what appears in the catalogue.  Below this section in the catalog, the asterisk will designate the following: “NTDT courses do not count as a breadth requirement for majors in Applied Nutrition, Dietetics, and Nutritional Science.”

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)

1.  In breadth Requirements – see the description of Nutrition (bold)
