List program changes for curriculum revisions:

  1. Eliminate HESC354, Seminar in Fitness Management (1) from major requirements
  2. Eliminate HESC263, Leadership Practicum (1) and HESC329, Dynamics of Team Problem Solving (3) from concentration requirements
  3. Replace HESC430, Physiology of Activity, with HESC433, Applied Physiology of Activity (currently proposed) in concentration requirements

List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum:

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

HESC433

Other affected units:

(List other departments affected by this new or revised curriculum.  Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

none

Rationale:

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

Changes 1 & 2 are proposed to eliminate content redundancy in the curriculum. Faculty have determined that most of the essential content from HESC354, Seminar in Fitness Management, (1 credit, P/F,) is already adequately addressed in HESC332, Health Behavior Theory and Assessment. Similarly, essential content components from HESC329, Dynamics of Team Problem Solving, are currently covered in HESC332 and HESC422, Organization and Administration of Leisure Services. The faculty have also decided that HESC263, Leadership Practicum, is not of sufficient value to continue as a requirement, given that all students in the major are required to do a 9-credit internship.

Change 3 replaces Physiology of Activity with a newly developed course designed to provide more applied and practical content knowledge for students in this concentration. Students in the majors in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, and Health and Physical Education, and in the Fitness Management Concentration in the Health Behavior Science major are all currently required to take HESC430, Physiology of Activity. However, the diverse academic course backgrounds and career goals of the students in these majors make it difficult to package course content to meet the needs of all students. The proposed course, HESC433, Applied Physiology of Activity, is designed to meet the needs of students in Health and Physical Education and Fitness Management, with more applied course content that relies less on background content from biology and chemistry. This course will present human physiology of exercise content within the context of fitness applications relevant for students majoring in Health Behavior Science with a Fitness Management concentration. HESC433 will therefore benefit the education of the student majors in the Fitness Management concentration.
