Rationale:

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

  1. HESC342, Survey in Adapted Physical Education and Recreation, is a survey of common disabling human conditions, but does not address how to teach students with disabling conditions. The recent hiring of an Adapted Physical Education specialist has allowed us to design a new course for health and physical education teacher candidates that specifically focuses on the strategies for successful inclusion of students with disabilities in health and physical education classes in the schools. This proposed course, HESC343, Adapted Physical Education, focuses on decision making and effective instruction as they relate to teaching health and physical education to students with special needs.  The relevance of curriculum development and instructional strategies is emphasized with applications which provide opportunities to effectively facilitate the related skills and knowledge. HESC343 will therefore benefit the education of students in the Health and Physical Education major because these students are preparing to be teachers and will encounter students in their classes who have disabling conditions.
  2. Students in the majors in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, and Health and Physical Education, and in the Fitness Management Concentration in the Health Behavior Science major are all currently required to take HESC430, Physiology of Activity. However, the diverse academic course backgrounds and career goals of the students in these majors make it difficult to package course content to meet the needs of all students. The proposed course, HESC433, Applied Physiology of Activity, is designed to meet the needs of students in Health and Physical Education and Fitness Management, with more applied course content that relies less on background content from biology and chemistry. This course will present human physiology of exercise content within the context of teaching applications relevant for students majoring in Health and Physical Education. HESC433 will therefore benefit the education of the student majors in Health and Physical Education.
