List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

MEDT 200 [THE LANGAUAGE OF MEDICINE] is a new course in the approval process.

MEDT 220 [FORENSIC SCIENCE] is a new course in the approval process.

MEDT 360 [CLINICAL IMMUNOLOGY AND MEDICAL VIROLOGY] is a new course in the approval process.

While MEDT 200 and MEDT 220 will be included in the minor, these courses were developed to support the mission of the Department of Medical Technology.  MEDT 360 is the lecture component of an already existing course (i.e., MEDT 380) which has both a lecture and laboratory component.

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

Goal 2: The student will apply critical thinking processes to the interpretation and evaluation of clinical laboratory data.

Goal 7: The student will acquire knowledge in medical laboratory sciences that they will apply to their future career as health care professionals.

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

Department of Biological Sciences

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

Clinical laboratory testing plays a crucial role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease.  More than 70% of all medical decisions are made based on clinical laboratory findings.  Thus, it is important for individuals pursuing careers in health related fields to be educated with regard to interpreting, evaluating, and validating clinical laboratory data.   The proposed minor would add an important dimension to the University of Delaware’s academic offerings for students preparing for admission to professional schools in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and to graduate programs in related health fields such as physical therapy, nutrition, and exercise physiology.

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)

A minor in Medical Diagnostics may be earned by a student in any University bachelor’s degree program through successful completion of a minimum of 15 credits as described below.  This degree provides students especially those preparing for admission to professional schools in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and to graduate programs in related health fields with the basic knowledge to evaluate and interpret clinical laboratory data.  Before beginning these courses, the student must meet the required course prerequisites.  Additional courses for satisfying the requirements for the minor may be approved by the Department.  A minimum of C- is required in all courses completed for the minor.
