VII.              Regular Agenda

 

1.   Resolutions: 

 

a.         Recommendation from the Faculty Senate Committee on Graduate Studies (Andrew Teplyakov, Chair) with the concurrence of the Coordinating Committee on Education (Deni Galileo, Chair) and the Executive Committee (Sheldon Pollack, Chair) for the request to add new graduate major - MA Speech Language Pathology (GRD0270) (attachment) (support attachment) (revised proposal) (support letter) (program policy) (revised resolution) 

           

WHEREAS,   the Delaware Governor’s office commissioned task forces in 2008 and 2011 that documented an acute need for additional speech-language pathologists in the state, performed a cost-benefit analysis, and recommended that a master’s program in speech-language pathology (required for licensure in all states) should be developed in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Delaware, and

 

WHEREAS,   the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of speech-language pathologists is expected to grow by 23 percent between 2010 and 2020, and

 

WHEREAS,   the Governor’s office specifically wishes to know that the University has approved a curriculum for this program before committing the resources necessary to launch it, and

 

WHEREAS,   the College of Health Sciences has brought in several consultants who have gone through the process of establishing master’s programs in speech-language pathology to provide expert advice for the development of the proposed curriculum and related budget, and

 

WHEREAS,   the College of Health Sciences will not launch the program in the absence of a commitment of full financial support from the state of Delaware necessary to support the first several years of operation until the program can reasonably become self-sustaining in accordance with budget projections, and

 

WHEREAS,   the proposed program will contribute to the University's "Path to Prominence": to become a premier research and graduate university; be it therefore

 

RESOLVED,  that the Faculty Senate recommends provisionally, for five years, the establishment of a new MA program in Speech-Language Pathology, effective September 1, 2016; and be it further

 

RESOLVED,  that this new program shall be launched provided only that full financial support for five years is received from the State of Delaware by June 30, 2014.

 

 

b.         Recommendation from the Faculty Senate Committee on Graduate Studies (Andrew Teplyakov, Chair) with the concurrence of the Coordinating Committee on Education (Deni Galileo, Chair) and the Executive Committee (Sheldon Pollack, Chair) for the request to  add a  BA Public Policy and MA Historic Preservation 4 + 1 (UGS GRD 0210) (attachment)

 

WHEREAS,   the proposed 4 + 1 Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and Master of Arts in Historic Preservation offers an alternate accelerated route for highly qualified students to begin pursuing a master’s degree in Historic Preservation while an undergraduate Public Policy major at the University of Delaware, and

 

WHEREAS,   the University of Delaware will be one of only a few schools in the nation to offer a five year accelerated bachelor’s and master’s degree program with a focus on Public Policy and Historic Preservation, and

 

WHEREAS,   the existing graduate programs in Historic Preservation already provide all the courses and administrative framework for such a degree, and

 

WHEREAS,   the proposed program contributes to two milestones on the University’s “Path to Prominence” to become a premier research and graduate university; to achieve excellence in professional education; be it therefore

 

RESOLVED,  that the Faculty Senate recommends approval of the establishment of a new 4+1 Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy/Master of Arts in Historic Preservation in the School of Public Policy and Administration.

 

 

 

c.         Recommendation from the Faculty Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies (Fred Hofstetter, Chair) with the concurrence of the Coordinating Committee on Education (Deni Galileo, Chair) and the Executive Committee (Sheldon Pollack, Chair) for the request to add Honors Degree to Medical Diagnostics Major (UGS 0219)  (revised attachment)

 

 

WHEREAS,   the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences has expressed the intent to establish an Honors Degree within the Medical Diagnostics Major, and

 

WHEREAS,   this proposal has been created in consultation with the Honors Program and includes a letter of support, and

 

WHEREAS,   students choosing the Medical Diagnostics Major are likely to be pursuing an advanced degree in healthcare (e.g., medicine, physician assistant) and may desire to pursue an Honors Degree, be it therefore

 

RESOLVED,  that the Faculty Senate recommends approval of the establishment of an Honors Degree in the Medical Diagnostics Major, effective September 1, 2013.

 

d.         Recommendation from the Faculty Senate Committee on Rules (Anu Sivaraman, Chair) with the concurrence of the Executive Committee (Sheldon Pollack, Chair) for the request to approve the new numbering system referring to individual policies of the existing Faculty Handbook (http://facultyhandbook.udel.edu/)

 

                                    WHEREAS,   the Faculty Handbook informs faculty of major policies and regulations of the University, and

 

WHEREAS,   it is beneficial to have the Faculty Handbook organized such that the policies contained within can efficiently be referenced, and

 

WHEREAS,   the current Faculty Handbook has only the major sections of the document numbered, and

 

WHEREAS,   the policies contained within each section are identified by title only, thus making it difficult to reference individual policies within the Faculty Handbook, and

WHEREAS,   revisions to the Faculty Handbook require Faculty Senate approval, be it therefore

RESOLVED,  that the current system referring to individual policies of the existing Faculty Handbook be revised as in handbook link above.
