B.     Resolutions: 

 

1.      Recommendation from the Committee on Undergraduate Studies (Amy Johnson, Chair) with the concurrence of the Coordinating Committee on Education (Alan Fox, Chair) and the Executive Committee (Dallas Hoover, Chair) for the request for Linguistics Department Name to be changed to Linguistics and Cognitive Science (attachment) (resolution attachment)

 

Whereas,          the Department of Linguistics is broadening its academic focus to include teaching and research in both linguistics and the cognitive sciences generally, and

Whereas,          the Department of Linguistics currently has an M.A. program in “Linguistics and Cognitive Science,” and

Whereas,          that broader emphasis needs to be recognized in order to effectively recruit students and faculty for the new department, and

Whereas,          the Department is currently proposing (simultaneously with this name change) an undergraduate major in Cognitive Science, be it

Resolved,         that the Faculty Senate recommends that the name, Department of Linguistics, be changed to Department of “Linguistics and Cognitive Science.”

 

2.      Recommendation from the Committee on Graduate Studies (Charles Mason, Chair) with the concurrence of the Coordinating Committee on Education (Alan Fox, Chair) and the Executive Committee (Dallas Hoover, Chair) for the request to disestablish MA in the Department of Art (attachment 1) (attachment 2, resolution)

 

                                     Whereas,              the MFA is accepted as the terminal degree in Art, and

 

                                     Whereas,              the Department of Art’s limited resources: studio space and teaching efforts, must be committed to the MFA program,

                                                                 and

 

                                     Whereas,              the current MA program in Art has only enrolled eight students in the last nine years, and

 

                                     Whereas,              those eight students all enrolled in Ceramics under a now retired faculty member, and

 

                                     Whereas,              the current faculty member in Ceramics supports disestablishing the program, be it therefore

 

                                     Resolved,             that the MA in Art be disestablished.
