2.             Minutes of February 18, 2002 were approved.

3.             Old Business:

                a.  None

4.               New Business:

                1. Item M (Revision to Physical Education Studies major) was stricken from the agenda. This item was returned to the Coordinating Committee. .It will appear on the April Faculty Senate Agenda.

2. Item N (Health and Physical Education interest areas) There was discussion previously concerning the 400 level course being offered to freshmen as well as seniors. The department chair offered a satisfactory explanation and the item was placed on the agenda.

3. Constitution and Bylaws change - Parliamentarian Jeff Jordan expressed a need to revise two propositions in the Constitution of the Faculty that are badly out-dated. As it now stands the semi-annual General Faculty Meeting is required to have a quorum of ¼ of the voting faculty (approximately 250 members). He suggested removing any quorum requirement for that meeting.  Rita/Karren will get the e-mail addresses from the 7 Colleges so that faculty will be notified and have the advance opportunity to consider/deliberate the proposed changes.

Jeff also indicated that Section IV, Article 13 and Section VIII, Article 3 both stipulate that Robert’s Rules, newly revised, 1970 be used. The 1970 edition was the 7th edition;  Robert’s is now in its 10th edition.

4. It was decided to invite Bill Frawley to the April Senate meeting to update faculty on the General Education Program.

5. Jim Richards will ask Provost Dan Rich to consider proposing recommendations/guidelines on the 124 credit rule without defining policy.

6. Jim Richards asks committee members to think about a speaker for the May meeting.

7. The Executive Committee requested a review of the multicultural course definition. The charge to the General Education Committee is to create a functional, approved definition of multicultural.  Currently the definition created by the Undergraduate Studies Committee in non-white, non-west, and non-male .Students suggest the current curriculum denoting one multicultural course requirement is inadequate.

The meeting adjourned at 9:50 a.m.

Next Meeting: March 18, 2002

Respectfully submitted,

Rita Girardi
