III.    Remarks: President Patrick Harker announced the appointments of Patricia Wilson, vice president and chief of staff; Scott Douglass, senior vice president; Michael Gilbert, vice president for student life; and Monica Taylor, vice president of development and alumni relations.  Dr. Harker also announced the formation of the Strategic Planning Committee co-chaired by Mark Barteau and Debra Norris.  The committee is to meet with members of the University community and others to get suggestions of where the University should go the next few years, as well as to find opportunities that will define the University and to identify priorities.  A Webform will be available soon for people to submit comments.  Dr. Harker asked the Faculty Senators to get individuals from their units involved in the process.  Members of the committee plan to have solicited comments by January of next year.

Provost Dan Rich welcomed all senators.  Dr. Rich announced that 50 new faculty are at the University this fall.  There are 3600 students in this freshmen class and 300 new students in the associate of arts program. This is the largest and most diverse class.  There are 1150 new graduate students.  The promotion and tenure review process is underway.  All units on campus will go through review and re-approval of their promotion and tenure document; a three year time line has been established.

a.          Recommendation from the Committee on Graduate Studies (Charles Mason, Chair) with the concurrence of the Coordinating Committee on Education (Amy Johnson, Chair) and the Executive Committee (Alan Fox, Chair) for the request to create a new dual degree for a Master of Chemical Engineering/MBA (attachment

Whereas,         The College of Engineering has offered a successful program for the Master of Chemical Engineering providing students basic graduate level knowledge in this profession, and

Whereas,          The Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics has offered a successful Master of Business Administration degree, providing graduate level students with the knowledge necessary to navigate in the business setting, and

Whereas,          there has been many inquiries over the last several years from individuals with engineering backgrounds who are interested in continuing their engineering education while complementing it with core business knowledge, and

Whereas,          a dual degree program for the Master of Chemical Engineering and Master of Business Administration will provide students with the necessary skills to broaden their engineering knowledge while gaining a detailed understanding of  the business environment, be it therefore,

Resolved,         that the Faculty Senate recommends that a new dual degree program be established that will simultaneously award a Master of Chemical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration
