IV.     Announcements

A.   Senate President Alan Fox—Dr. Fox reminded the senators that elections will be held at the next meeting of the Faculty Senate. The report on the Resident Life program will be presented at the May meeting, and a recommendation will be voted on.

B.   Priscilla Cole, Co-Chair Recycling Committee - State of Recycling at UD Presentation introduced Erin Hartigan who reported on the Graduate Students Senate (GSS) ad hoc Recycling Committee. The graduating class of 2007 made a class gift of $62,000 to be used towards recycling. The GSS ad hoc Recycling Committee was formed in 2007.  The committee conducted a survey and inspected campus buildings.  The study found that many buildings on campus had recycling containers. However, the survey found that many people did not know what materials could or could not be recycled or who was responsible for recycling the materials collected.  The survey did not find much of an improvement in recycling since the Faculty Senate ad hoc Committee made a report in 2005.  A recycling policy is not in place, but Facilities is developing one.

VII.           Regular Agenda

A.     Old Business:  Dr. Fox, responding to a question from the floor, announced that an ad hoc committee is being formed to investigate the Arts and Sciences’ Breadth Requirements across campus and to submit an interim plan.

B.     New Business: None

VIII.        Introduction of New Business

Such items as may come before the Senate.  (No motion introduced under new business, except a motion to refer to committee, shall be acted upon until the next meeting of the Senate.)

A senator stated that it is a Board of Trustee regulation that all faculty have full voting rights within a unit. The senator does not think it is appropriate for non-renewable, temporary full time faculty to vote on new hires in a department. The senator would like the Faculty Senate to develop a policy. The suggestion will be reviewed by the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and could be referred to the appropriate committee for action.
