B.     Resolutions:  None

VI.      Regular Agenda

A.     Old Business:  None

B.     New Business:

1.      Announcements for Challenge: None

2.      Resolutions:

a.       Recommendation from the Coordinating Committee on Education (Dallas Hoover, Chair) with the concurrence of the Executive Committee (Avron Abraham, Chair)for the name change of the College of Marine Studies to College of Marine and Earth Studies (attachment)

Whereas,          the “College of Marine Studies” is a designation that reflects programs focused on the marine environment, and

Whereas,          the Department of Geology, which formally joins the College of Marine Studies on July 1, 2006, has a broader “earth”

emphasis in research and education than is reflected in the word “marine”, and

Whereas,          that broader emphasis needs to be recognized in order to effectively recruit students and faculty for the new college, and

Whereas,          there is ample precedent for such a name in programs of similar stature where geology and marine studies are clustered, be it therefore

Resolved,         that the Faculty Senate recommends that the name, College of Marine Studies, be changed to College of Marine and Earth Studies.

Resolution passed.

b.      Recommendation from the Committee on Committees and Nominations (Eric Rise, Chair) with the concurrence of the Rules Committee (Donald Lehman, Chair) and the Executive Committee (Avron Abraham, Chair) for the creation of a Charge for the General Education Standing Committee of the Faculty Senate and the revision of the Faculty Handbook under Section: 1 Organization of the Faculty Standing Committee System of the Faculty and Its Senate.  This will be inserted between the Faculty Welfare and Privileges Committee Charge and the Graduate Studies Committee Charge (attachment)

Whereas,          in May 2004 the Faculty Senate approved a resolution that the General Education Committee be converted from an ad hoc committee to a standing committee, be it therefore

Resolved,         that the attached charge is written for the Faculty Senate Committee on General Education

A brief discussion on the relationship between the Undergraduate Committee and the General Education Committee and its role with graduate education ensued. Resolution passed.

c.       Recommendation from the Committee on Graduate Studies (Charles Mason, Chair) with the concurrence of the Coordinating Committee on Education (Dallas Hoover, Chair) and the Executive Committee (Avron Abraham, Chair) for approval of Permanent Status for M.S. in Mechanical Engineering  and Master of Engineering: Mechanical (attachment –1)  (policy, attachment –1)

Whereas,          both the MSME (research thesis required) and MEM (course-work only) masters degrees of the Mechanical Engineering Department were given provisional status on March 2, 1998, and thus need to gain permanent status, and

Whereas,          there were no special concerns expressed by the Senate when both the MSME and MEM degrees were given provisional status, and

Whereas,          the distinction was created to adhere to College of Engineering policy of outreach to the local engineering community and clearly differentiate that one could obtain a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering either with or without writing and defending a research-related thesis, and

Whereas,          it is clear from the enrollment history that the change did not significantly increase nor decrease the total number of students obtaining master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering - thus the change did not require any additional resources, and

Whereas,          indications are that students completing both programs have gone on to successfully advancing their careers; be it therefore

Resolved,         that both the MSME and MEM degrees be granted permanent status.

Resolution passed.

d.      Recommendation from the Committee on Undergraduate Studies (Douglas Buttrey, Chair) with the concurrence of the Coordinating Committee on Education (Dallas Hoover, Chair) and the Executive Committee (Avron Abraham, Chair) for approval of Permanent Status:  B.A. and B.A. Honors in East Asian Studies  (attachment-1) (attachment-2) (attachment-3)

Whereas,          the Faculty Senate gave provisional approval on March 2, 1988 for the new major leading to a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies, and

Whereas,          the Faculty Senate also gave provisional approval subsequently for the major leading to a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies with Honors, be it therefore

Resolved,         that the major and major with honors in East Asian Studies be granted permanent status effective immediately.

Resolution passed.

e.       Recommendation from the Committee on Undergraduate Studies (Douglas Buttrey, Chair) with the concurrence of the Coordinating Committee on Education (Dallas Hoover, Chair) and the Executive Committee (Avron Abraham, Chair) for approval of Permanent Status:  B.S. Math and Economics (attachment-1)  (attachment -2)

Whereas,          many students wish to obtain a degree in Economics with a strong background in Mathematics, and

Whereas,          rigorous study of both disciplines is solid preparation for graduate school in either Economics or Mathematics, and

Whereas,          the Department of Economics (College of Business and Economics) and the Department of Mathematical Sciences(College of Arts and Sciences) have collaborated enthusiastically in offering this program, and

Whereas,          the program has proved successful in attracting good students, and it has fulfilled the goals set fourth when it was approved on a provisional basis, and

Whereas,          this program does not require additional resources in order to run successfully, be it therefore

Resolved,         that the BS major in Mathematics and Economics be granted permanent status in the College of Arts and Sciences

   Resolution passed.
