REGULAR MEETING OF THE UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE

Meeting Minutes

6 February 2006

104 Gore Hall                                                                                      4:00 pm

I.      Adoption of the Agenda

II.       Approval of the Minutes: December 5, 2005

III.      Remarks:  Provost Dan Rich

Dr. Rich reported that he and Lou Hirsch met with the Joint Senate and House General Assembly at the request of the University to discuss the University of Delaware undergraduate admission process. The University has drafted a policy to help guide high school students, guidance counselors, and administrators on the curriculum students should take to be successful in receiving acceptance to the University of Delaware. The commitment policy states that Delaware students who successfully complete the guidelines will almost be guaranteed admission to the University.

Lou Hirsch stated that the policy will help drive the high school curriculum in Delaware to help students be more successful in college. The commitment policy is not the minimal requirements for admission to the University. Send comments about the policy to Lou Hirsch before the end of February.

Over 21,000 undergraduate applications have been received so far for fall 2006 enrollment. Applications are up for students of color. All qualified Delaware student applicants are accepted. Those Delaware students predicted to be successful are accepted to the Newark campus. Some Delaware applicants that show promise but not accepted to the Newark campus, are accepted into the associate degree program. Those students completing an associate degree are guaranteed admission to the Newark campus.

The majority of out of state applicants are well qualified. No matter what a student’s grade point average or SAT score, all applications and letters of recommendation are read.

Dr. Rich added that there are 341 more students in the 2005 freshman class compared to 15 years ago. The 341 additional students are all Delaware students. There has been no increase in out of state student admissions.
