Graduate Studies Senate Committee Minutes
April 11, 2007
Members present: Charles Mason, Chair; Abena Aidoo (Graduate Student), Robert Opila, Andrew Teplyakov, Pablo Huq, Peter Kolchin, Richard Fang, Darwin Davis, Mary Martin, and Susan Brynteson
Old Business:
1) Early American Culture: Mary Martin reported that the issues with the changes to the
program have been discussed with the Dean of the College and that the unit will not change the degree requirements as proposed in 2007-2008 but will come forward next year. The change in the name of the major was approved previously.
New Business:
1) Discussion occurred with regard to the data reported in the PSPE Permanent Status Program Review for the M.S. in Ocean Engineering. The report listed names of students not in the MS program in Ocean Engineering but who are studying ocean engineering in other program. Mary Martin will provide a report on the students enrolled as well as admission applications in the next meeting.
2) The Committee had received a document from the
Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville Graduate Council giving the approved
statement of goals for student achievement for all graduate degree programs
offered at SIUE. The Committee engaged
in a discussion of whether or not UD should have such a document/policy on
Graduate Student Learning Goals such as the Undergraduate Learning Goals
supported by the UD Faculty Senate. The
consensus of the Committee was that it was not in favor of such a document/policy
but instead decided to investigate the possibility of creating an overall
mission statement for graduate study at UD.
Darwin Davis and Robert Opila agreed to lead the effort to develop a
draft. Further discussion of this topic
will occur with regard to the Assessment requirements being set forth as part
of the Middle States Accreditation Review.
Next Meeting is scheduled for April 25th at 8 am.
