Graduate Studies Senate Committee Minutes
February 13, 2007
Members present: Charles Mason, Chair; Abena Aidoo (Graduate Student), Robert Opila, Sandeep Patel (substitute for Andrew Teplyakov), Pablo Huq, Peter Kolchin, Richard Fang, Darwin Davis, Mary Martin, and Paula Vasquez (Graduate Student),
Old Business:
1) Modification of Program Policy Statement for Mechanical Engineering was accepted and approved.
New Business:
1) Change in name of the PhD program in Materials Science to Materials Science and Engineering was approved.
2) The Linguistics & Cognitive Science Combined BS/MS program was approved.
The combined program requires a distinct 30 credits for the MS and 124 credits for the BS. Need statement regarding students who have taken 400 level courses as under graduates with the same subject matter as 600 courses required for graduate study.
3) M.S. Program in Bioresources Engineering was approved by the Committee with the suggestion to inform the Chair that the track in Plant and Animal systems may or may not be part of the proposal. Changes in the program need department faculty approval.
4) The proposal on the changes to the MFA program in Art was tabled so that a recommendation on whether concentrations should be applied to or not.
5) The proposal to change the name of the Marine Studies Concentration in Marine Biology/Biochemistry be changed to Marine Biosciences was approved.
6) The proposal to offer a combined program in Music Management B.A. programs with an M.B.A. was approved as a 4+1 program. Students would apply to the MBA program in the spring of their Junior Year with the anticipation that the MBA could be completed at the end of a total of 5 years.
