Graduate Studies Senate Committee Minutes

November 19, 2007

Members present:  Charles Mason, Chair;  Darwin Davis, Matthew Kinservik (excused), Mary Martin, Peter Kolchin, Susan Brynteson, Richard Fang, James Flynn, Andrew Teplyakov, Jeffry Fuhrmann, Adam Marsh,  Robert Opila, Graduate Students Rachel Schiavone and Joshua Wickman for Alan Stottlemyer.

 

Minutes of November 5, 2007 were approved.

 

Old Business:   A)  The Chair reported that the revisions to the Marine Studies Policy Statement and Geological Sciences Policy Statement have not been received or approved.  The Committee suggested continuing to table the approval of these documents until reviewed and approved by Chuck Mason and Mary Martin. 

 

                        B)  The Committee continued discussion on the IS&TM Program Policy Statement and found it ready to be forwarded to the Senate for acceptance.

           

New Business:  A)  Helen Bowers (Lerner College of Business and Economics) gave a presentation on the proposal for a new program identified as a M.S. in Finance.  The Committee requested additional information about the student market for such a degree program as well as information about other similar programs in the immediate area.  Dr. Bowers reported that the Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance and the establishment of the Exelon Trading Center in the Lerner College will provide state-of-the-art, discovery-based learning options.  The Committee requested clarification of the admission requirements especially with regard to math and the expectation of the understanding of the fundamentals of finance and accounting concepts..  The Committee will review the revised program policy statement at its next meeting.

 

Announcements:  The Chair announced that the M.S. degree in Bioresources Engineering was approved by the Coordinating Senate Committee and forwarded to the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate.
