Graduate Studies Senate Committee Minutes

February 28, 2007

130 Hullihen Hall Board Room

Members present:  Charles Mason, Chair; Abena Aidoo (Graduate Student, excused), Robert Opila, Andrew Teplyakov, Pablo Huq, Susan Brynteson, Peter Kolchin, Matthew Kinservik, Richard Fang, Darwin Davis, Paula Vasquez, Mary Martin, and  Cynthia Paris.

Old Business:

1)   Linguistics & Cognitive Science Combined BS-MA Option.  The Committee requested that word “he” be changed to “the student” throughout the academic approval form and the policy so it conforms to the University Catalog language.  We also request that they change the word "may" to "must" in the 5th line of the text under Course Overlap so it reads "the student must petition the Director of Graduate Studies to substitute another graduate course for the 600-level course in question.”  This proposal was approved at the last meeting and reaffirmed at this meeting.

2)  Revision of Master of Fine Arts degree requirements.  Rene Marquez met with the Committee.   After discussion of several recommendations, he agreed to resubmit the program policy statement and the academic approval form for review by the Chair.  The revisions will be presented to the Committee at the next meeting.   (Course description changes will be handed in to the Registrar's Office.)

New Business:

1)  The revisions to the two minors in Math Education were unanimously approved.

Announcement:  The Committee was reminded that the next meeting will be the last one for programs to be approved and be able to make it to the April Senate Agenda.

The next meeting is scheduled for March 14, 2007, in the Senate Conference Room, 180 S. College Avenue.
