Graduate Studies Senate Committee Minutes

February 5, 2008

105 Hullihen Hall

8:45 a.m.

Members present:  Charles Mason, Chair;  Darwin Davis, Matthew Kinservik (excused), Mary Martin, Peter Kolchin (excused), Susan Brynteson (excused), Richard Fang, James Flynn, Andrew Teplyakov, Jeffry Fuhrmann, Adam Marsh,  Robert Opila, Graduate Students Rachel Schiavone and Alan Stottlemyer.

Old Business:   A) The Chair reported that the Chair of the PTTP Theatre program has agreed that 60 credits will be the requirement for all concentrations in the Program.  As for the reduction in credits in Theatre Literacy, Sandy Robbins reported that UD's MFA program was not in line with similar programs at Yale, Harvard, and others and this was the reason for the change. The Committee approved the changes to the PTTP program.

New Business:  A) Additions of concentrations to the M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering programs:  The proposal brought forward the establishment of 5 concentrations in the degrees.  Concentrations are voluntary and students selecting multidisciplinary or other specialized studies are not required to select a concentration.  Adding the option of concentrations to the degrees did not change the total credits required for the degree.  The Committee unanimously approved the proposal.

B)  Chair provided updates on the following items:

            1)  No additional information yet received for the changes to the Human Development and Family Studies program.

            2)  The Chair reported that the Program Policy Statement is being revised for the change in name of the Ph.D. program in Climatology to Ph.D. in Geography.

3))  The Chair reported that  Daniel Simmons and Melinda Duncan will come to the next meeting to discuss the new M.S. degree with a major in Biotechnology as well as the changes in the degree requirements for the Ph.D. program in Biology.

            4)  The Chair reported that Larry Purnell would come to the next meeting to discuss the changes in the RN to MSN program.

C):  Committee discussion occurred on the option of the University to consider a separate catalog for Graduate Studies wherein the full program policy statements could be reported.  There was positive support of this idea from both the Committee members and Student Committee members.
