Graduate Studies Senate Committee Minutes

Members present:  Charles Mason, Chair;  Darwin Davis, Matthew Kinservik (excused), Mary Martin, Peter Kolchin (excused), Susan Brynteson (excused), Richard Fang (excused), James Flynn, Andrew Teplyakov, Jeffry Fuhrmann, Adam Marsh,  Robert Opila, Graduate Students Rachel Schiavone and  Alan Stottlemyer.

 

Minutes of  December 17, 2007 were approved.

 

 

Old Business:   A)  Master of Science with a major in Finance:  The Committee recommended that Chuck Mason follow up with Dr. Bowers to edit the Program Policy

Statement.  Items needing attention are:  1) Library support letter; 2)  Description of FINC 861 course; 3)  Corrections of catalog descriptions; 4) Add funding section;

5)  Assessment plan; and 6) "typos" in the document.  The Committee voted to approve the program with provisional status once the Chair reports back that the Program Policy was updated.

 

            B)  Chuck Mason reported that the Program Policy Statement for the M.S. in Fashion Studies was still in progress and the vote on the new program would be taken at the next meeting.

           

New  Business:  A)  School of Education Program Changes:

            1)  M.Ed. in Reading:  Committee approved changing the credits required for the program from   36 to 33; revising EDUC 608 and 609; and admitting students only in the Fall semester.

            2)  M.A. and Ed.S. in School Psychology:  Committee approved the elimination of three courses and the addition of three new courses and a revision in one course.

            3)  Master of Instruction: Curriculum change to move the one credit portfolio (648) course to the beginning of the program and add a 2-credit portfolio course (new 669) to the end of the program making the required credits for the degree 33 credits rather than the current 31 credits.  Added new concentration in Agriculture Education.  The Committee tabled the approval of these changes until it could gather more information about the current M.A. in Agricultural and Technical Education offered in the AG College.

            4)  Committee voted to disestablish the M.Ed. in Educational Leadership.  It is being revised into two new majors.

            5)  Committee approved the M.Ed. in School Leadership:  This is a new major rather than a concentration called Educational Leadership in the old program.

            6)  Committee approved the M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration:  This is a new major rather than a concentration called Educational Leadership in the old program.

            7)  Committee approved the Program Policy Statement for the M.Ed. in Exceptional Children and Youth.  There were no course changes but needed merged in to the School of Education Program Policy Statement.

            8)  Committee approved the revisions to the Ph.D. program in Education that were needed due to the changes in the School Psychology Program (see Number 2) above.

 

            B)  The Committee approved the disestablishment of three concentrations (Early Childhood Development & Inclusive Education, Applied Family & Community Studies, and Risk and Disabilities) in the M.S. program in Human Development and Family Studies Program.  The Concentration in Family and Human Development and Research is to remain.  The Committee seeks clarification on whether all M.S. students must have a concentration or not.
