Graduate Studies Senate Committee Minutes

Members present:  Charles Mason, Chair; Abena Aidoo (Graduate Student), Robert Opila, Andrew Teplyakov, Pablo Huq, Susan Brynteson, Peter Kolchin, Matthew Kinservik, Richard Fang, Darwin Davis, John Vacca, Mary Martin, and Dewey Caron.

 

Old Business

            A)  Discussion continued with regard to the continued work by Groups #3 and #4 for the review of the permanent status of the Health Promotion program.

 

New Business

            A)  The Committee accepted the APA form, self-study, and PSPR reports of the Hospitality Information Management program.  The Committee unanimously approved to recommend the program for permanent status to the Coordinating Committee.

 

            B)  Chuck Mason explained the changes to the MS in Wildlife Ecology program to begin in Fall 2007.  The changes include the elimination of meeting the Wildlife Society Certification.    In addition, Wildlife Ecology program will require two specified courses in particular groups of organisms and courses in population studies.  The Committee unanimously approved the changes.

 

            C)  Chuck Mason presented the changes in the MS and PHD in Entomology and Applied Ecology.  The MS will become the MS in Entomology and the former concentrations of are eliminated.  The PHD will become the PHD in Entomology and Wildlife Ecology and the students in the PHD program will select a concentration in either Entomology or in Wildlife Ecology.  The Committee unanimously approved the changes.

 

            D)  William Ritter visited the Committee for the purpose to discuss the proposal to add a Master of Science program in Bioresources Engineering.   After discussion of the proposal, the Committee requested that the Chair report to Dr. Ritter the following recommendations:  1)  Focus the MS program on two specific areas such as water resources and plant and animal systems; 2)  consider identifying specific course requirements for the degree in specific areas; 3)  require the students to develop a plan of study within the first semester especially since the program is individualized; 4) identify whether the chair or a director would be responsible for the administration of the program; and 5) present addition details on the demand and employment potential for students in this program.
