Graduate Studies Committee

February 1

180 S. College Avenue

Members present:  Charles Mason, Chair; Dewey Caron, John Sawyer, Matthew Kinservik, Andrew Teplyakov; Ali Poorani; Pablo Huq, Susan Brynteson, and Mary Martin

The Committee reviewed the changes presented for the MA and PHD programs in Political Science and International Relations.  The Committee requested that the name of the proposed new course to be required for the degrees to be USA and the Global System rather than America and the Global System.  The primary change to the degree requirements was to add the new course, PSIR 807, as a required course in both the MA and PHD.  In addition, one free elective course was dropped from the PHD requirements to permit the addition of the new course.

The Committee began initial discussion on the name change to the major of Linguistics to Linguistics and Cognitive Science.  The Committee voted to table the discussion and requested that a representative of the Linguistics department attend the next meeting.

John Sawyer presented the changes to the MS degree requirements for the Organizational Effectiveness, Development and Change major and the combined program of the MBA/MS.  The revisions included the modification of the Profession Project requirement and the addition of a comprehensive examination requirement.

The Committee requested a separate Academic Approval Form for each as there are two different degrees affected by the changes.  In addition, it was requested that the MBA/MS document contain a full listing of the courses required for the combined degree. The Committee voted to approve the changes upon the final review of the Program Policy Statement by the Assistant Provost for Graduate Studies.

Chuck Mason announced that the next meeting would be held on February 16th at 9 am, location TBD.
