MINUTES

Meeting #4  11/19  Hullihen 130 & 105.

Present: Douglas Buttrey, Amy T. Johnson, Louis L. Hirsh, Lesa Griffiths, Joseph DiMartile,
David L. Marshall, Charles E. Mason, Jeff Jordan.

I. Discussion of the Multicultural criteria.

A. Professor Leslie Goldstein presented a case that the 1987
(April) resolution should be understood in a particular way --
that it be understood in the form found in the May 1986 Senate

minutes.

B. Professor Jinfa Cai presented concerns that have been expressed
in the A&S Faculty Senate, and by the A&S ad hoc committee.

These presentations were discussed.  It was decided that a written
statement would be drafted that states why the "three of five" rule was
adopted.

II. Revisions were made to the five criteria in response to various
concerns.  These revisions are intended to make the criteria as clear as
possible.  The criteria now read:

    of the United States.

 2. The course content provides significant opportunity for students to
gain a greater understanding of world cultures.

 3. The course content provides significant opportunity for students to
gain a greater understanding of the behavior of people within the
    culture(s) under study.

 4. The course content provides significant opportunity for students to
compare and contrast the culture(s) under study with their own.
