List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
None
Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate
education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/
Identify other units affected
by the proposed changes:
(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)
None.
This is a joint major between Entomology & Wildlife Ecology and
Plant & Soil Sciences
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
Proposed changes in Plant Protection major and rationale:
1. Change ENWC 305, 2 credits, to ENWC 215, 1 credit
Rationale:
Just housekeeping – ENWC 305 has been changed to ENWC
215
2. Drop PLSC 101 (Botany 1) from the requirements
Rationale: Plant Science faculty state that after taking BISC
207 and 208, students have already been exposed to much of the information that
is presented in PLSC 101 (plant science majors do not
take BISC 207 and 208)
3. Add PLSC 151 (Introduction to Crop Science, 3 credits) as a requirement
Rationale: A substitute for the PLSC 101 Plant Science credits, and a
good basic introduction to plant production
4. Instead of having PLSC 411 as a specific requirement, have students take one course from the following: PLSC 411 Diagnostic Plant Pathology (3 credits), PLSC 416 Plant Virology (4 credits), PLSC 429 Introduction to the Fungi (4 credits) or PLSC 319 Environmental Soil Microbiology (4 credits).
Rationale: Additional choices are needed for PLSC 411, because this course has not been taught recently and may not be taught in the near future. All of the courses listed are every-other-year offerings.
5. Add to the plant production course list: PLSC 308 Fruit Science (4 credits) and PLSC 401 Agronomic Crop Science (3 credits).
Rationale: These courses are appropriate additional choices for the
“plant production” course list.
6. Drop the stated requirement of “3 credits of related Internship, Independent Study, Research, or Field Experience”
Rationale:
This requirement is now covered by the
University-wide “Discovery Learning Experience”
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
COMMENT: In
above list, change ENWC 305 (2 credits) to ENWC 215 (1
credit).
COMMENT: Change PLSC 101 (4 credits) to PLSC 151 Introduction to Crop
Science (3 credits).
Replace
PLSC 411 requirement with “A plant pathology or related course selected from
PLSC 319, 411, 416, or 429” (3-4 credits).
COMMENT: Change list to PLSC 105, 133, 302, 308, or 401 (3-4 credits).
COMMENT: Omit “plus 3
credits of related Internship, Independent Study, Research, or Field Experience
(credits now total 9).
COMMENT: Total credits remain unchanged
