List
new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the
overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is
dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge
list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
ARTH870 – Master’s Paper. This course will replace ARTH869 – Master’s Thesis. The Department has voted to eliminate the Master’s Thesis required of all M.A. students and has replaced this requirement with a Master’s Paper requirement. This new course (3 credits) will be required of all students working toward the M.A. degree, as they complete the Master’s Paper.
Explain,
when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of

Describe
the rationale for the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating,
revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)
The proposed changes to the graduate curriculum include:
The reasons for the proposed program
changes are two-fold. On one hand, the changes address the time-to-degree
issues that the department currently faces. The proposed changes will most
significantly affect students who have earned a B.A. in Art History (or related
discipline) and who wish to pursue a Ph.D. degree. These students will enter
the proposed Direct Ph.D. Program. Students who enter this program will be
required to complete 36 hours of coursework (in place of 48 credits as in the
current program). The goal is to move students through the program in a timely
manner and, ultimately, to support the early stages of dissertation writing
during their last year of funding (currently, students have a gap year in
funding, that is, the year immediately following the completion of the Ph.D.
exams and the year before they are able to apply for external funding on a
competitive basis). Students earning an M.A. degree will benefit from the
change from a Master’s Thesis to a Master’s Paper, which is more focused in
scope than the thesis. One the other hand, the proposed changes will align our
program requirements with the requirements of our peer and aspirational
graduate programs. The Department is committed to recruiting and retaining the
best in the field, and the proposed changes to the program will attract
top-level students at both the M.A. and Ph.D. levels. In addition, the proposed
changes to course and language requirements reflect the diverse course
offerings by our faculty. The faculty has changed significantly in the past
eight years, and the new program will create opportunities for students to work
across a range of fields within the discipline.
