List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
None.
Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate
education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/
The major will continue to support the following goals:
#1: attain effective skills in oral and written
communication.
#4: engage questions of ethics and recognize
responsibilities to self, community, and society at
large
#6: develop the intellectual curiosity, confidence, and
engagement that will lead to lifelong
learning
#8: expand understanding and appreciation of human
creativity and diverse forms of aesthetic
and intellectual expression
#10: develop an international perspective in order to
live and work effectively in an increasingly
global society
Because of the increased focus on the target language
in the revised major, students will have more opportunities to hone their
communicative skills (goal #1) while deepening their cultural awareness (goals
# 8 and 10)
Identify other units affected
by the proposed changes:
None.
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
The proposed revision of the Japanese Studies major is
in line with other undergraduate majors that require ten courses (e.g.,
History, Philosophy, and Political Science) and begin at the 100 level (e.g.,
Art History, Criminal Justice, Economics, English, History, Physics and
Psychology).
The revised major
eliminates 6 credits of courses that do not affect language ability because
they are taught in English. This focuses
the major on courses in the target language – both linguistic and
culture-related – increasing linguistic proficiency, strengthening oral and
written communication skills, and deepening cultural knowledge at the same
time.
In the proposed
revision, students would be taking all but one of their courses in
Japanese. Including one Japan-related
course taught in English allows for the students to get a much-needed overview
of historical movements in literature and film, as well as contemporary visual
and popular culture, and provide context in difficult texts which would not be
accessible in the target language.
Beginning the major at JAPN107, instead of JAPN2XX,
recognizes the work accomplished by students in attaining the intermediate
level of language proficiency. It also
allows students with little or no previous exposure to Japanese to start on the
major requirements as early as their third semester rather than their fourth at
the university. JAPN107, which concludes the three-semester language
requirement, serves as a stepping stone to the 200-level classes.
Streamlining the major in Japanese Studies to a
ten-course model, focusing on courses in the target language, will offer the
opportunity of a language major to more students on the UD campus,
strengthening the global mission of the university. This model adds flexibility while broadening
accessibility, offering the possibility of a first or second major in Japanese
in combination with many other areas of study.
Program Requirements: Summary of changes: Major is streamlined with a reduction
of total credits: from 36 credits to 31 [Students placing out of JAPN107
will take a 3-credit JAPN2XX course (or above).
In this case, the major will total 30 credits.]
