List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
Students in the History/Foreign Language major will be
required to take HIST 268. This is a seminar required of ALL other history
majors, and is regarded as one of the most important courses majors take in the
department. The course is a seminar limited to majors only, and is designed to
introduce students to the practices of historians: the methods and sources they
use, how they interpret evidence and build an argument, how they document their
sources, and how they write. Though each instructor who teaches HIST 268 (there
are usually six or seven sections in any given semester) chooses a different
theme for the course, all instructors use their chosen theme to emphasize the
practices outlined above, and invariably require students to produce a research
paper based on these practices.
Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate
education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/
The change relates to goals 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and maybe 9
or 10, depending on the topic of HIST 268.
Identify other units affected
by the proposed changes:
(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)
The degree is jointly offered by the departments of
History and Foreign Languages. The Dept of Foreign Languages unanimously
approved the change in both its Undergraduate and Executive Committees, as
stated in the attached e-mail from Annette Giesecke,
USC chair in FLL.
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
History/Foreign Language majors are currently the ONLY
history majors who do not have to take HIST 268. They miss out on one of the
most important courses taught in the Department of History, and evidence
suggests that this places them at a distinct disadvantage when they take their
senior (400-level) seminar in their senior year, since for all other majors
HIST 268 is a prerequisite for the capstone HIST 4xx seminar. We propose the
simple addition of HIST 268 to the History/Foreign Language curriculum to
address this problem. The addition of HIST 268 will not increase the
total number of credits required for graduation (currently 124). It is simply
being added within the major requirements for the degree, increasing this
number from 24 to 27 credits.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
HISTORY/FOREIGN LANGUAGE MAJOR
(French, German, Spanish, Russian, or Classics): Revised curriculum (changes
in bold)
Major Requirements within the History Department (27 [not 24] credits)
1. HIST 101 Western Civilization to 1648
2. HIST 102 Western Civilization: 1648 to the Present
3.
HIST 268
seminar [not previously a requirement]
4. Five 300-level courses, at least two of which must deal with countries that use the chosen foreign language
5. History seminar at the 400-level or above (excluding HIST491 and 493 and Independent Study)
