List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
NONE
Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revisedcurriculum supports the 10 goals
of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/
The change will enable History majors who take the
proposed alternative to the senior seminar to fulfill the following goals as
effectively as with the current requirement:
# 3 (work and learn both independently and collaboratively), # 5
(understand the diverse ways of thinking that underlie the search for
knowledge), #6 (develop the intellectual curiosity, confidence, and engagement
that will lead to lifelong learning), and #7 (develop the ability to integrate
academic knowledge with experiences that extend the boundaries of the
classroom).
Identify other units affected
by the proposed changes:
(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)
NONE
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
We wish to create an alternative path for History
majors to complete the required senior seminar. The change will permit majors,
under specific circumstances, to consider an internship or History research course (HIST 464 or HIST 468) as
equivalent to a senior seminar. The
internship or research must be completed in a course setting, in conjunction
with other History majors and regular class meetings with a History faculty
member. Our experience of offering both HIST 464 and HIST 468 as 15-person
courses suggests that, in those circumstances, students have an experience
comparable to the experience of taking a regular senior seminar. Our experience also suggests that, for some
students, an internship or research course can provide a practical alternative
to a required seminar.Revision: see below page 5.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)

projects and individual internships do not fulfill the seminar requirement.
Revision approved by the History Department Faculty at its
meeting on April 21, 2011:
“Capstone requirement: All
History majors must complete a “capstone” experience, in the form of a History
seminar at the 400 level or above, an internship course taught by a History
Department faculty member (HIST464), or an undergraduate research course
(HIST468). Independent study projects
and individual internships do not fulfill the capstone requirement. History Education majors must complete the
“capstone” experience by taking a 400-level (or above) seminar.
Revision to proposal, 1
February 2012: Mechanism for determining when HIST 464 or HIST 468 is taught as a seminar:
When a specific section of HIST
464 or HIST 468 satisfies the seminar requirement, the Department will indicate
that in the registration booklet by a notation similar to the notation provided
for Second Writing sections of courses.
When an instructor seeks to offer a specific section of HIST 464 or HIST 468 as
a seminar, he or she will submit that request to the Department Chair and the
Assistant to the Chair, who will then provide the approval. The History Department Undergraduate Chair
will monitor the process, making sure that a notation is entered in the registration
booklet and the departmental course booklet.
Such a notation could read: “section -011, and only section -011,
fulfills the requirement for a 400-level seminar for History majors”
When members of the
Undergraduate Studies Committee complete senior checkouts for History majors
(as they now do routinely), they will double-check student coursework to ensure
that any HIST 464 or HIST 468 course satisfying the seminar requirement was taken
as a seminar and not as an individual internship or
undergraduate research project.
