Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate
education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/
The Minor in European Studies supports the 10 goals of
undergraduate education in several
ways. In particular, this
combination of courses will examine European societies from both
historical and contemporary perspectives and through the
analysis of cultural differences relying on history, political science,
language and several other disciplines. In demanding that students approach European
Studies through a variety of disciplines, the Minor will address the goals
stated numbers 1-4 of the General Goals to Success in general, and Goal 5—an understanding of the diverse ways of
thinking that underlie the search for knowledge in the arts, humanities, and
social sciences—in particular. In
designing the Minor to include courses in Art History, Geology, etc, we hope to encourage students to develop the
intellectual curiosity and engagement that underlies Goals 6 and 8—expand
understanding and appreciation of human creativity and diverse forms of
aesthetic and intellectual expression; a Minor in European Studies allows
interested students to study emigration and immigration issues, thereby addressing
Goal 9. Finally, a Minor in European Studies is ideally suited to achieving the
intention of Goal 10—developing an international perspective in order to live
and work effectively in an increasingly global society.
In the end, the courses required for the proposed Minor
draw on the interdisciplinary goals at the heart of Area Studies.

Re:
Proposal for European Studies Minor
Dear John, with this email I would
like to state the support of the Department of Political Science and
International Relations for the proposed minor in European Studies. We
understand that European Studies minors will be expected to take six credits
from among specified political science courses and we agree to this. We
understand also that European Studies minors may take additional elective
classes in political science.
Kind regards, Gretchen Bauer

Philosophy Department
Dear Professor Montano
I cannot speak for the entire Philosophy Department on this, but I support your efforts to create a Minor in European Studies. Having examined your proposal, it looks to me like you would be offering an excellent interdisciplinary minor that would provide a nice opportunity for many students to explore the history, culture and politics of a particular European country. The Philosophy Department would be more than happy to contribute to this Minor by regularly offering courses that focus on European philosophy in various historical periods.
Best,
Kai Draper

Re: Proposal for European Studies Minor
I fully support the idea of creating a European Studies
Minor. Many of our students have strong interests in this area, and
participate in Europe-based study abroad programs already. The proposed
program would enhance our program for many students.

Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)

Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
The Minor in European Studies blends the humanities and the social sciences. Offered jointly by the Departments of Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, and Political Science, this interdisciplinary major combines language training with courses in history, politics, and literature. Accordingly, it offers students a comprehensive knowledge of a particular European country and culture (e.g. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia) within a broader European context. Elective courses can be taken in art history, philosophy, music, or any other subject germane to the students' chosen focus. The courses from each department are chosen from a list already in use for the European Studies Major; in both instances, the rationale has been to choose courses that deal with Europe from a variety of perspectives. In the few courses that are not exclusively on a European topic, students are required to demonstrate to the Director that a majority of the course as well as their primary project, essay, or assignment is on a European subject. Students are guided in designing a curriculum that will strengthen knowledge of both their target area and Europe as a whole. They are also encouraged to study abroad in Europe on a winter session or semester program.
The European Studies minor provides students with skills they will need in endeavors such as graduate school, careers in government or other international agencies, international law, or commercial enterprises with an international orientation.
