Resolution

Whereas, the Department of Linguistics is broadening its academic focus to include

teaching and research in both linguistics and the cognitive sciences generally,

and

Whereas, the Department of Linguistics currently has an M.A. program in “Linguistics and Cognitive Science,” and

Whereas, that broader emphasis needs to be recognized in order to effectively recruit students and faculty for the new department, and

    Whereas, the Department is currently proposing (simultaneously with this name change) an undergraduate major in Cognitive Science, be it

Resolved, that the Faculty Senate recommends that the name, Department of Linguistics, be changed to Department of “Linguistics and Cognitive Science.”
