None.
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
The change in name of the Phd Degree is designed to
reflect actual practices that currently exist in the department. Linguistics is a major branch of cognitive
science. In 2006 Adams and Andreasan joined the department from Philosophy, and
in 2007 Hestvik and Heinz joined the department. With these additional faculty
members, the department builds on existing strengths in theoretical and
descriptive linguistics (syntax, semantics, phonology, phonetics), especially
from the perspective of underdescribed and endangered languages, while
expanding faculty expertise into additional areas of cognitive science
(experimental psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, animal and embodied
cognition). Like the faculty, students are now working in Linguistics and
Cognitive Science, and so the name of the degree reflects what they are
actually doing.
Also, in 2004 the MA in Linguistics was changed to a MA
in Linguistics and Cognitive Science. In Fall 2007 the
department changed its name to Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science,
and established a undergraduate program in Linguistics and Cognitive Science.
The change from three required 800 level seminars to
four brings the catalog language in line with the official grad policy, which
is now in line with actual requirements. Likewise, the changes
in requirements for admission for foreign students also brings the
catalog language in line with actual requirements. These changes are
independent of the name change.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
see attached catalog language
and grad policy language
