I see no problem with including UNIV 101 in your options for an FYS.

Subject: Re: Support for UNIV101 for Math Sci

Dear Dr. Abraham:

Last Spring,  Math Sci Department submitted a proposal to modify the
graduation requirements for our math majors. One of the proposed items
was to allow math majors to choose either Math 268 (as stated in the
current catalog) or UNIV 101 to fulfill their FYE requirement.

The impetus for allowing UNIV 101 as an alternative for FYE is that we
have not been able to offer too many sections of Math 268 each Fall to
our incoming math majors . Since our department offers basically five
math degrees with different requirements,  some of the freshmen had a
difficult time in picking the right courses to start their first
semester.

If you have concerns with this change, please contact Lou Rossi,
rossi@math.udel.edu. He is the undergraduate chair in the math
department.

You might have received the following reply from Cindi way back in
March. Somehow, I might have lost your reply and did not manage to
attend your meeting.

Hi, YJ. I hope that you are well.

For the change to FYE course to be in the catalog formally it would need
to go through the approval process in Senate next year. The course
number change would also need to happen in the next cycle of the course
inventory updates, which will open in July of next year.

In the meantime, though, if you would like to start to offer students
the option of taking UNIV 101, I think that would depend on the
availability of seats in that course for this fall. I've copied Avron
Abraham, Faculty Director of the FYE program, to see if he can let us
know if that might be an option.

Your e-mail is very timely in regard to the FYE issue as I was about to
contact your department and a few others in our College that do offer
departmental seminars that students take instead of UNIV 101 to fulfill
the first-year experience requirement. Dr. Abraham would like to meet
with a group of faculty representatives from those six departments to
offer information about resources available for faculty that provide
them with information available to faculty teaching UNIV 101. I've
copied Peter, too, and will soon send a message to you asking if you'd
like to attend a meeting with Avron on this topic.

Sincerely,

Cindi
