None

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

The department has long had a Music Theory/Composition degree.  While the two areas are closely related, the areas of concentration are different in emphasis—the former being aimed toward a written thesis and the latter toward the creation of a body of musical works.  With that in mind, we have decided to decouple the two degrees (Music Composition will be a separate degree).  We believe that this, along with the modifications to the curriculum will better prepare our students for the professional world and/or graduate work.

In creating this course, the following general changes were made:

·         Reworking of Breadth requirements to meet the new University and College requirements.  This has involved removing MUSC courses and rearranging the non-music courses to create a coherent Breadth experience.  Our professional degrees have a lower number of Breadth courses, and the proposed revision keeps these requirements in line with our Applied BM degrees.

·         Strengthening the language requirement to better prepare our students for graduate study.

·         In response to comments from the National Association of Schools of Music (our accrediting body) we have added a strong requirement in applied music.

·         We have removed those courses that were more relevant for a combined Theory/Concentration degree.

No new courses have been created to serve this degree.  All required courses are regularly taught as part of our other degree requirements.

Program Requirements:
