List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
Revised Course: MUSC419
Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate
education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/
The study of Music History and Literature by its nature,
and because of the requirement for a senior thesis, directly addresses a number
of the 10 goals of undergraduate education at the
Much of the coursework in Music History and Literature
supports major portions of goal #1 (Attain effective skills in (a) oral and (b) written communication, . . . and (d)
the use of information technology). Courses emphasize the study of
musical works and the ability to
speak and write about them (one of the Program Learning Goals in the Department
of Music). This will prepare them for
the thesis experience, which will serve as a capstone for this goal. Study in this area relies
more and more on electronic resources, giving the student useful experience
with pedagogical and scholarly technology.
The thesis process will also directly address goals #2 and #6 (Learn to think critically to solve problems
and Develop the intellectual curiosity,
confidence, and engagement that will lead to lifelong learning).
Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:
(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)
None
Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
Over the last decade, a number of our students have chosen to
pursue coursework that prepares them for graduate study in Musicology.
In order to serve these students better, we are proposing a
major in Music History and Literature (the standard name for such an undergraduate
degree).
Most students with an interest in this area have taken
advantage of the Dean’s Scholar program, and have used the Music Theory degree
as a starting point. Because of this,
and because the two fields are so closely aligned, we have used our Music
Theory degree as the starting point for this new major.
In creating this course of study, the following general goals
were addressed:
·
Devising
of Breadth requirements to meet the new University and College
requirements. This has involved removing
MUSC courses and rearranging the non-music courses to create a coherent Breadth
experience. Our professional degrees
have a lower number of Breadth courses, and the proposed major keeps these
requirements in line with our Applied BM degrees.
·
Creating
a strong language requirement to better prepare our students for graduate
study.
·
In
response to comments from the National Association of Schools of Music (our
accrediting body) we have provided a strong requirement in applied music for the
major.
·
We
have used existing courses (upper division and graduate) to meet the needs of
this degree.
No new courses have
been created to serve this degree. All
required courses are regularly taught as part of our other degree
requirements.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
