List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter None)
None
Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate
education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/
The major will continue to support the 10 goals of
undergraduate education.
Identify other units affected
by the proposed changes:
(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter None)
None
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
· Make all concentrations two-tiered: 1. Institutions and Process, 2. Issues and Policies.
· Add additional 400-level class to concentrations
The two-tiered concentrations systematize and simplify the political science major, making negotiating the requirements less confusing for both student majors and their faculty advisers.
The increase in 400-level required courses from two (6 cr.) to three (9 cr.) for the American, Global Studies, and Public Law concentrations reflects the facultys desire to raise the bar of academic challenge in those concentrations to equal that of the POSC major without concentration and the Public Policy & Administration concentration, both of which already require three 400-level courses. Again, this would help simplify and standardize the POSC major. (The IR major currently requires four 400-level courses, or 12 credits out of a total of 52 credits in an interdisciplinary program.)
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
POLITICAL SCIENCE
(Concentrations: American Politics, Global Studies, Public
Law, Public Policy and Administration)
The
Department of Political Science and International Relations offers major
programs leading to the B.A. in Political Science, the B.A. in International
Relations, the B.A. in Political Science Education, and a joint program with
the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature leading to a B.A. in French,
German, or Spanish/Political Science.
Honors degree options are available for all degrees. A minor in political science is also
available, as well as a minor in public administration.
Political
science majors acquire a broad introduction to the study of government and
politics within a liberal arts tradition.
To graduate with a major in political science, students must maintain a
minimum C- grade in all POSC courses. Students should also note that no more than
45 POSC credits will count towards the 124 credits needed to graduate. Coursework for both major options with or
without a concentration aims to help students develop analytical and written
and oral communication skills and to prepare them for a wide array of careers
(including law) and active citizenship.
Political science majors are strongly encouraged to take advantage of
many experiential learning opportunities including internships, independent
research under faculty supervision, study abroad, or service learning. Detailed explanations of experiential
learning opportunities are available in the department office and on the
departments website: www.udel.edu/poscir.
Students changing their
major to political science must have completed POSC 150 with a grade of C- or
better and completed at least 12 additional hours of University courses. Students must have a minimum of a 2.3 average
to change their major to political science.
Students transferring into the major from outside the
The department maintains an
advisory program for prelaw students and for students interested in government
service.
Except as otherwise indicated,
nonmajors may enroll in any political science course without prerequisites.
