The revised curriculum was approved by a College wide MBA Committee on April 10, 2009. The same was also shared with the Department Chairs of the four departments (Accounting and MIS, Business Administration, Economics, and Finance), which offer classes in the MBA program. There are no new courses being added to enable us to offer the new MD/MBA dual degree.

 

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

There is an exponential growth in the MD-MBA programs in the USA during the last decade. In large part it is due recognition of an urgent need to have physicians leaders to serve as hospital administrators who would have credibility (of medical community) and managerial skill set to understand health care delivery systems as well as run the hospitals.  Today, there are over 50 MD/MBA programs in the country (nearly half of the medical schools in the USA) and many are operated by a partnership between two different Universities. We think there is scope to attract students from the Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University via innovative curriculum that combines live and online classes at the University of Delaware. The dual degree MD-MBA program will be particularly attractive to the students who are accepted at JMC-TJU via the DIMER program (Delaware Institute of Medical Education and Research).
