REQUIREMENTS FOR SPORT MANAGEMENT MAJORS

 

 

(NOTE: All requirements except free electives must be taken for a letter grade.  Pass/Fail status courses may only count in Group F.)

 

UNIVERSITY BREADTH REQUIREMENTS

All students at the University of Delaware are required to take a minimum of 12 credits of University breadth requirements—3 credits each from lists of courses designated as Creative Arts and Humanities, History and Cultural Change, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Technology.  Students may not fulfill this requirement with courses from the Lerner College (e.g. BUAD and ECON), and they must take courses from four different departments outside of the College.  Students must pass the courses with a grade of C- or better to fulfill the University breadth requirements.  Courses taken to fulfill the University breadth requirements may also satisfy department group requirements below; however, credits may be counted only once towards the degree.

 

GROUP A ‑ 9 credits from the Creative Arts and Humanities

See www. for the specific list of group A courses.  Six credits of foreign language instruction may be applied.  No more than six credits may be taken in any one department.  One course must be completed with a C- minimum grade in an area other than foreign language instruction.

 

GROUP B ‑ 9 credits from History and Culture Change

See www. for the specific list of group B courses.  No more than six credits may be taken in one department.  At least one course must be completed with a C- minimum grade.

 

GROUP C – 6 credits from the Social and Behavioral Sciences

PSYC 100 and a SOCI course are required.  See www. for specific list of SOCI courses.  A C- minimum grade in required in either the PSYC 100 or SOCI course.  (Note: If a C- minimum grade is not earned in PSYC 100 or the SOCI course another course must be taken from the specific list of group C courses at www. and completed with a minimum grade of C- to fulfill the University breadth requirement.  This course may be applied to the major as part of the 9 credits of group F below).

 

GROUP D ‑ 7 credits of Natural Science

See www. for the specific list of group D courses (Note: STAT, MATH and CISC courses may NOT apply to group D).  This requirement includes one associated laboratory credit.  MATH 221 with a C- minimum grade fulfills the Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Technology University breadth requirement.

 

GROUP E ‑ 18 credits of Skills

1)      Three credits of Mathematics, MATH 221 or MATH 241 with a minimum grade of C-. 

2)      Three credits of English, ENGL 110 with a minimum grade of C-.

3)      Six credits of Statistics, MATH 201 and 202 with a minimum grade of C-.

4)      Three credits of communications requirements: COMM 212.

 

 

GROUP F ‑ 9 credits of Free Electives

No courses offered by the College of Business and Economics may be used in the free elective category.  Free electives include any course outside the College of Business and Economics, subject to the following:

1)      A maximum of two credits of HESC 120 may be applied to this group.

2)      Excess credits from Groups A through D may be counted toward Group E.

3)      English Essentials (ENGL 011), Intermediate Algebra (MATH 010), College Intensive Literacy (EDUC 011), or any other "0" level course may not be counted toward degree.

4)      If a student elects to take an eligible free elective course Pass/Fail, a maximum of one P/F course (3-4 credits) may be taken each semester.  This is in addition to courses offered only on a P/F basis.

 

Exceptions allowing College of Business and Economics courses to count in the free elective category include:

1)      Students admitted to the minor in Management Information Systems or the minor in Entrepreneurial Studies may apply nine credits of the minor.

2)      Students admitted to the major/minor in Economics may apply three credits of Economics at the 200-level or higher.

3)      Students participating in BUAD Study Abroad Programs may apply three credits if completing a double major within the College.

 

GROUP G ‑ 67 credits of College of Business and Economics courses

1)      Students are required to earn at least a "C-" in ECON 151, 152; ACCT 207, 208; BUAD 110, BUAD 301, 306, 309, 441, FINC 311, SPMT 202, 302, 344, 437, 439, 464 AND 486.

2)      CISC 101 may be substituted for MISY 160.

3)      ACCT 302, 350, 351 and 352 do not count toward degree for majors.  (ACCT 302 or MISY 225 may be substituted, however, for MISY 261, and ACCT 350 and 351 or ACCT 352 may be substituted for SPMT 347 if completing a double major within the College). 

4)      Students may take only one of the required SPMT upper-level courses as specified under “Major Areas” at another institution.

         

 

WITHIN THE SEVEN-GROUP 122-CREDIT CURRICULUM MUST BE:

1) THREE-CREDIT MULTICULTURAL REQUIREMENT.  COURSES TAKEN PASS/FAIL MAY NOT COUNT TOWARD THIS REQUIREMENT.

2) ONE FRESHMAN EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT FROM ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:  UNIV 101, HESC 135 (IF RECOMMENDED FOR ATHLETES), BUAD 110, OR AN HONORS COLLOQUIUM (FOR HONORS STUDENTS ONLY).

WHO’S MY ADVISOR?  All honors students, juniors and seniors in are advised by Mrs. Sandy Fields, 236 Lerner Hall, 831-4565.  Freshman and sophomores are advised in the Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Services, 102 Purnell Hall.

 

Students majoring in Sport Management are part of the Department of Business Administration.  Students admitted to the Alfred Lerner College of Business & Economics as “undeclared” may freely elect Management, Marketing, International Business Studies, Operations Management, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or Management Information Systems majors if they do so prior to October 1 of their sophomore year.  Students classified as IBS, MKT, MGT, or OM will be given priority to change within these majors on a space available basis during the open application periods each fall and spring.

 

 

Note:  Many students take courses through the Winter and Summer Sessions to reduce their regular semester courseload.  These special sessions normally offer only introductory level courses.  If you want to take a course somewhere other than UD, be sure to get the course pre-approved by the department that offers the equivalent course and your College’s Dean.  You will need a copy of the course description and/or syllabus.  The College or University must be AACSB accredited to transfer business courses.
