List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
None
Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate
education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/
The proposed changes will primarily impact goal number
5: Understand the diverse ways of thinking that
underlie the search for knowledge in the arts, humanities, sciences and social
sciences. Early Childhood Education (ECE) majors will have the opportunity to
take a wider variety of courses within the four content areas listed within
goal 5.

(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)
None
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
The majority of the changes will involve breadth requirements
and will align with the requirements adopted by the Faculty Senate that will be
implemented beginning in the fall of 2010. Accreditation requirements both for
the state of
The two primary math courses (
The final change is that HDFS 101 Introduction to Human
Services and Cultural Competence will no longer be the required Freshman Year
Experience course for ECE majors. This course will no longer be offered because
the content is covered in other courses within the ECE major.
MUED 390 Music in Early Childhood will be replaced by a choice
of courses that will be available in the HDFS department office and will be
called a “Focused Elective.” The choices will be from a list of courses that
will allow ECE majors to select a course that covers a topic of interest to
them. ECE majors will complete a form to select the course prior to taking it.
