List
new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the
overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is
dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge
list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
1. Add: EDUC 745 - Collaborative Teaming in Special Education
One of the program’s main objectives, guided by the SOE conceptual framework, is to prepare special educators who are effective partners with administrators, other clinical professionals, community leaders, and parents in providing high quality educational programs for their students. EDUC 745 directly addresses the knowledge, skills, and issues involved in such a collaborative approach. These competencies also are required by the new NCATE accreditation standards for special education programs.
2. Delete: EDUC 607 - Educational Research Procedures
While competencies in applied research are important for masters-level teachers, another of the core courses in this program, EDUC 682 - Research in Special Education, directly and adequately addresses them. The redundancy between these two courses compromises our overall objectives.
Explain,
when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of
undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

Describe
the rationale for the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating,
revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)
3. Delete the “Selected Topic Option” for a candidate’s Final Paper.
We have learned that the second of two final-paper options for students in our masters program is a poor assessment instrument for our intended purposes. It also is difficult to equate the difficulty level and work load across the self-selected topics chosen by our students. Finally, this option very rarely is chosen by our students.
4. Delete the “Educational Diagnosis Specialty Area.”
The Educational Diagnosis
specialty area has limited utility for schools in

Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum
as it should appear in the Course Catalog.
If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the
current curriculum and include a
side-by-side comparison of the credit distribution before and after the
proposed change.)
Based on what is currently stated in the 2006-2007 UD Graduate Catalog, the description of the M.Ed. with a “Major in Exceptional Children and Youth” will require minor changes to three sentences, as noted below:
· on
p. 313 – “Areas of specialization are: (1) Elementary Special Education, (2)
Secondary Special Education, (3) Special Education Technology, and (4)
Severe Disabilities, and (5) Educational Diagnosis.”
· on
p. 314 – “Required Core Courses (18 credit hours): EDUC 607,
EDUC
623, EDUC 679,
EDUC 680, EDUC 681, and EDUC 682, and EDUC 745.
·
on p. 314 – “Specialization Area Coursework (15 credit
hours): Students will complete 15 credit hours of specialization coursework in
one of the following areas: Elementary, Secondary, Special Education
Technology, or Severe Disabilities, or
Educational Diagnosis.”
The credit distribution is the same before and after the changes proposed in this proposal, in that EDUC 745 is being substituted for EDUC 607.
