List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program
objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
None.
Explain, when appropriate,
how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education:

The proposed change does not address additional goals
for the Elementary Teacher Education major.
Identify other units affected
by the proposed changes:
(Attach permission from the affected units. If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)
The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS)
is affected by the proposed changes. Their support for the proposal is
documented in the email below from Dr. Lynn Worden who coordinates the HDFS
minor.
Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s):
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
Elementary Teacher
Education (ETE) students who pursue the Special Education concentration
currently choose one of three options to fulfill 15 credits: 1) a
“mini-concentration” in English, math, science or social studies, 2) a
“mini-concentration” in urban education or 3) the Disabilities Studies minor. We
are proposing to add the Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) minor as a
fourth option for special education students. This minor is similar to the
Disabilities Studies minor and the urban education mini-concentration where all
three options broaden the students’ understanding of issues that are important
to children. Specifically, the HDFS minor provides students with the
opportunity to engage deeply in the areas of human development, family studies,
relationships and diverse communities.
One of the
requirements in the 18-credit HDFS minor is to take an elective from the list
of courses in the “Development within Diverse Communities” category. One of the
courses in this category is EDUC 258 Cultural Diversity, Schooling and the
Teacher. ETE students are required to take this course or EDUC 259 Cultural
Diversity in Community Contexts for their program. The Department of Human
Development and Family Studies is currently submitting a program revision
proposal to add EDUC 259 to the list of courses in the “Development within
Diverse Communities” category. When this course is added, ETE students will
automatically satisfy the requirement for this category and only need to take
15 more credits to complete the minor. Having the minor become 15 credits will
allow special education students to fit it into their program.
A benefit of adding
this minor to the list of options for special education students is that the
Disabilities Studies Minor is very popular and fills up quickly. For example,
the coordinator for the minor is currently only accepting freshmen because the
seats are filled for the next three graduating cohorts. Adding the HDFS minor to
the list of options will give special education students an alternative in case
the Disabilities studies Minor fills for their cohort.
Program Requirements:

be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of
the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)

Subject: RE: program change approval
Laura,
The HDFS
faculty voted unanimously at our meeting on Friday to approve adding EDUC 259:
Cultural Diversity in Community Contexts as a choice for the Development within
Diverse Communities requirement for the HDFS minor so that ETE students with a
Special Education concentration will be able to add the HDFS minor as an
option. We felt that the content of EDUC 259 was an excellent fit for the
requirement.
Can you
please verify that your department will allow students in the HDFS minor who
are not ETE majors take EDUC 259 if they choose to use that course to complete
the Development within Diverse Communities requirement? Thank you for your
quick action in making this change happen.
