List
new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the
overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?
(Be aware that approval of the
curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the
Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
NEW COURSE
EDUC 748: Master’s Portfolio: Analysis of Practice
REVISION TO COURSE
EDUC 769: Master’s Portfolio: Evaluating Effectiveness … change from 2 credits to 1 credit
In short, an existing required course (EDUC 769: Master’s Portfolio: Evaluating Effectiveness) will be reduced from 2 credits to 1 credit and a new 1 credit required course (EDUC 748: Master’s Portfolio: Analysis of Practice) based on the material being removed from EDUC 769 will be created. The required total credits for the program is not changing.
The program currently consists of two portfolio courses. EDUC 648 (1 credit) is taken at the beginning of the candidate’s program and introduces candidates to the content standards from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and to the framework of the MI program’s capstone portfolio. EDUC 769 (2 credits) is taken at the end of the candidate’s program; it introduces skills for analyzing the effectiveness of practice and provides structure for the completion of the portfolio, which requires the analysis of data from the candidate’s classroom.
Data from recent offerings suggest candidates need more time between the introduction of analysis skills and successfully implementing those skills in the capstone project. Therefore, EDUC 769 will be split into 2 one-credit courses … EDUC 748 (new) and EDUC 769 (revision of current course). EDUC 748 will introduce candidates to analysis skills. EDUC 769 will provide structure for applying these skills while completing the capstone portfolio.
Candidates will enroll in the first portfolio course, EDUC 648, at the beginning of their program. They will enroll in the second portfolio course, EDUC 748, part way through their program. They will enroll in the third portfolio course, EDUC 769, at the end of their program. Spreading the courses throughout their program has the benefit of keeping candidate’s focused on the development of the capstone portfolio, which should help candidates finish within the program time limits set by the university.
Explain,
when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of
