List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

None

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

This program change would have no impact on how the current program already supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education.

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

None

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

The proposed change would allow students to take either EDUC 440 or ENGL 479 as one of the five required mini-concentration interdisciplinary courses in the curriculum. The plan is to offer EDUC 440 once a year and to stop offering ENGL 479. Once enrollment in the Southern Delaware ETE Program increases to meet or exceed course enrollment limits, we plan to offer both ENGL 479 and EDUC 440 once a year, allowing students a choice.

Students in the Southern Delaware Elementary Teacher Education program have a special education concentration and take 15 credits in a mini-concentration interdisciplinary set of courses from a variety of content areas. The proposed added course is EDUC 440 Literacy Instruction for English Language Learners.

The mission and goals of the Southern Delaware ETE Program are as follows:

The mission of the UD/Milford PDS is to foster a collaborative community of learners through professionals committed to the study and improvement of education.  The UD/Milford PDS promotes advanced pedagogical theories and practice for student interns and faculty from the School of Education and the Milford School District. We believe that all members of the partnership are learners and that all activities of this partnership should be designed to improve their knowledge and skills while enhancing student learning.

In recent reflections with current interns, program graduates, mentor teachers, and administrators, it was determined that there was a great need for more instruction related to ELL. There is a large population of ELL students in southern Delaware where our students complete their internships and plan to accept their first teaching position.  By adding EDUC 440 to our interdisciplinary course offerings, we would be filling a gap in the knowledge base of our program and better preparing our students to teach in this community.

The cost of adding EDUC 440 to our interdisciplinary course offerings would not be any different from our ENGL 479.  Our set of interdisciplinary courses was designed by faculty in the School of Education exclusively for the Southern Delaware ETE Program. Although their titles and content backgrounds come from a variety of content areas, we have always hired the faculty and covered the S-contracts for all five courses. The instructor would be a qualified ELL faculty member from our district partnership working with the goals and objectives established for EDUC 440 and integrating the philosophy of the southern Delaware program of connecting theory and practice during internships.

By adding EDUC 440 to our interdisciplinary course offerings we will improve students’ pedagogical knowledge and understanding of English Language Learners during coursework and their practical teaching experiences.

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)

The proposed program revision would have no impact on the University required courses, general or professional study courses, the total number of credits required of the students in this program, or the required number of the mini-concentration interdisciplinary course credits.  The change only adds an option in the courses required for the mini-concentration. The following is a side-by side comparison of the program requirements for the current program and the proposed revision. The proposed revisions are highlighted in yellow.
