The Department of English is affected by the proposed changes. Dr. Matthew Kinservik, the Department of English Chair, supports the proposal and his permission is attached below.

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

Elementary Teacher Education (ETE) students must take an English literature course to meet state certification requirements. Students in the middle school English concentration satisfy this requirement through their concentration coursework. Students who are not in this concentration take one of 12 specified English literature courses, where 11 of them are for English non-majors. The English department created the courses for non-majors within the past five years, and we made a program change to have our students take them beginning in Fall 2007. However, these courses have not been offered on a regular basis and one course (ENGL 290) is no longer offered. We learned from the Department of English that the “non-majors” courses were created to serve students who could not take the “majors” courses due to pre-requisites, but that the pre-requisites have not been activated and students could still take any “majors” courses. Therefore, would like to make a program change to expand the students’ choices to help them satisfy their literature requirement.

We propose to have ETE students who are not in the middle school English concentration take any ENGL literature course to satisfy their literature requirement. Opening up the options to any English literature course would provide students with some flexibility in the very structured ETE program and an opportunity to take courses that match their particular interests and needs for the school classroom. This revision would not have an impact on our accreditation because the literature course is not included in our NCATE/ACEI assessment plan. The proposal would allow our students to continually satisfy state certification requirements.

Dear Laura,

Thank you for the note, and please forgive my delay in replying.  This change makes great sense to me, and the English Department is fully supportive of it.

All good wishes,

Matt

Subject: English literature requirement

Matt,

I coordinate the Elementary Teacher Education (ETE) program and am writing about a change we would like to make to the English literature requirement in our program. Currently, our students who are not in the middle school English concentration take one of 12 specified literature courses to satisfy their English literature requirement and the courses are listed below. Eleven of these courses are for English non-majors, and we have noticed that they have not been offered on a regular basis and one course is no longer offered. Peter Feng explained to us that the “non-majors” courses were created to serve students who could not take the “majors” courses due to pre-requisites, but that the pre-requisites have not been activated and students could still take any “majors” courses.

Therefore, we would like to make a program change to expand the students’ choices to help them satisfy their literature requirement. Specifically, we would like to allow ETE students to take any ENGL literature course. Opening up the options to any English literature course would provide students with some flexibility in the very structured ETE program and an opportunity to take courses that match their particular interests and needs for the school classroom. Would you be willing to approve this program change that would go through the Faculty Senate process? Thank you for taking the time to think about this! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best,

Laura
