Describe the rationale for
the proposed program change(s): Name Change from Leadership to Organizational and
Community Leadership
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
The need to revise the name of the Leadership major and minor
to Organizational and Community Leadership stems from several sources.
First, the Leadership program moved from the Department of
Consumer Studies to the
Second, Leadership is an amorphous name without meaning or context,
particularly to prospective freshmen. Our programmatic assessments have
indicated that many prospective students believe that this is a skill-based,
personal development program, and thus do not choose it as an academic major.
The name of Organizational and Community Leadership, however, positions the
major within our mission: our majors use their knowledge of leadership and
quality of life issues to mobilize collective actions within organizational
contexts that advance ethical, socially responsible and sustainable change for
individuals, communities, and societies.
Third, a review of undergraduate leadership
programs nationwide indicate that Organizational and Community
Leadership is the program name most used. Thus, using that name will make us
more recognizable and more easily found by prospective students and colleagues
in similar units at other institutions.
